 World Book Day

On April 23th, the World Book Day is celebrated all over the world. It is a commemorative date approved and disseminated by the UNESCO since 1995, although in Spain it was celebrated since 1930.

This celebration started as an idea of  Vicente Clavel Andrés, a Valencian writer, when he was the vice-president of Barcelona's Official Book Chamber.

Clavel was certain that he wanted the date of this celebration to allude the author of "Don Quixote." He decided to establish the Book Day on the day that was thought to be Cervantes' birth date, October 7th. After a Royal Decree of Alfonso XIII in 1926, the "Fiesta del Libro Español" was created, during the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera.

This Day was celebrated on October 7th for four years, until 1930.  The idea of changing the celebration to the date of Cervantes' death arose for two main reasons: The first was that this date was documented while his date of birth was still uncertain. On the other hand, it was understood that the month of April was more appropriate for performing acts in the street.

Therefore, they decided to change the celebration to April 23th which also coincided with the death of another of the most celebrated literary authors, William Shakespeare.

Today we know that this date is not when Miguel de Cervantes really passed away. It was on the night of April 22 that his burial was recorded on April 23. Neither does it coincide with the death of Shakespeare who actually died on May 3rd, 1616 of the Gregorian calendar established in countries such as Spain Italy or France. However, we must keep in mind that at the time in England they established the Julian calendar according to which Shakespeare died on 23 April.

At any rate, this date was extended to all the corners of the globe, after UNESCO officially established the "World Book and Copyright Day" in 1995.
